Don't Wait Any Longer—NOW is the Time to File

Have you put off doing your taxes?

Like many Canadians, it's possible you haven't filed your taxes for one, two or even five years or more.

We understand:

  • Preparing taxes on your own can be daunting.
  • If it's been several years since you filed, there could be a lot of things to account for.
  • You're worried you'll owe the government money.

What If You Have Refunds Waiting for You?

  • You may be missing out on significant tax refunds, especially if you pay for childcare or tuition, or contribute to an RRSP.
  • Canada Child Benefit, GST/HST, Ontario Trillium and all other refundable benefits are only paid out once you file your current year tax return.

What If You Miss the Deadline & Owe Money?

  • You'll be paying a 5% penalty for filing late, plus additional penalties the longer you wait.
  • Overdue taxes owing have a compound daily interest rate of 6%.
  • The CRA could take measures to retrieve money it determines you must pay.

"If you don't file your taxes, it's not going to get any better.

It's only going to get worse."

What Can Happen If You Don't File Your Taxes?

Arbitrary Assessment

The CRA could decide to complete and file your return for you. It will estimate your income and taxes owing, charging you interest on this debt.

The amount owing won't be as favourable to you compared to if you'd completed your return yourself.

Garnishing Your Wages

The CRA could force your employer or another third party that pays you money to  redirect part of your salary or wages. The money comes off your paycheque and goes directly to the CRA.

The CRA will use these funds to reduce or pay off your tax debt.

Collections & Bad Credit

The CRA could decide to take you to court. You tax debt becomes a matter of public record, which would ruin your credit score.

If your debt is too large, you might have to file for bankruptcy, damaging your credit score for up to 7 years.

Difficulty Getting Financing

A lot of lenders won't approve you for a mortgage or renew your existing one.

Banks especially have strict borrowing guidelines compared to some private lenders. If  you owe an unreasonable amount in taxes, they will be reluctant to lend you money.
